When planning our wedding, Ryan and I started with location. We thought that a “destination” type wedding would be fun because it provides an opportunity to spend more time with guests, but we also wanted the wedding to be in a location that was meaningful for us and that we had a strong connection to. Honolulu, HI was the perfect fit. Next we thought, “what’s the best time to leave Spokane and head to a tropical destination?”… February!

In February 2014 we took a quick weekend trip to Honolulu to celebrate Ryan’s grandmother’s birthday and choose a venue and exact date. We decided on the chapel at the St. Louis campus for the ceremony as both our families have connections to the school (Ryan’s dad is an alum, and my mom is an alum of the sister school Sacred Hearts) and the campus is truly gorgeous. For the reception, there was a lot to consider. We knew we wanted to be somewhere that evokes the laid-back, tropical island vibe we love, so hotel ballrooms and resort locations just didn’t fit. Given the number of guests we expected and logistics of traveling/transportation, the outdoor private estate venues also weren’t a great option. We started thinking about some of our favorite spots that we could share with our guests, and quickly remembered the Outrigger Canoe Club. The Club sits directly on the beach and the restaurant and lanai is a favorite lunch location whenever we’re in Hawaii. After a quick walk through (and mahi mahi sandwiches with mai tais for good measure) we decided this was definitely the best venue.

In terms of wedding “details”, Ryan and I really focused on what was most important to us. Delicious, local inspired food and drinks; a fun DJ who would get people on the dance floor; and sharing our perspective and experiences that make Hawaii such a special place for us with those people who matter most. We couldn’t have been happier with how everything turned out not just with the wedding itself, but with all the activities in the days before and after. We feel truly blessed that we had an opportunity to celebrate with so many friends and family members all in one place. For us it was a week that can’t be replicated, full of memories that will never be forgotten, and we owe a big THANK YOU to everyone who made our wedding so special!
