Nick and I met in high school, I was a freshman and he was a junior. The first time I saw him I thought he was handsome, but he didn’t pay much attention to me. Since we were both athletes, we were in study hall together and had the opportunity to get to know each other a little bit. We hung out a couple times but our relationship never moved beyond a friendship…He was really into sports and I was really into him.
He graduated and went on to play baseball in college and I figured our paths would never cross again. Fast forward 15 years…while I was cutting a mutual high school friend’s hair, Nick’s name came up as we were talking about people we were still friends with. After a few days, I couldn’t stop thinking about him, so I decided to look him up on Facebook. Lucky for me, he was even more handsome than I remembered! We messaged back and forth for a week before going on our first date.
After Tia contacted me on Facebook, we hung out for the first time on my 32nd birthday, and things just took off from there. We began dating and spending a lot of time together. Tia met my friends, and I hers, and for the first time my friend’s opinions about my girlfriend didn’t matter because I knew she was special. Fortunately for them, they liked her too.
Then I got sick and Tia literally never left my side. After my first surgery and a day in the hospital, I knew that I loved her more than anything and that she was a very important person to me. She looked after me the entire time I was laid up, even making me eat when I didn’t want to. In fact, that’s the only time she’s ever cooked for me. 😉
After our first date, we began spending a lot of time together and I eventually introduced Nick to my daughter, Maeya. Since the day he met her, he has treated her like his own daughter, it just melts my heart. At times, I even feel like he is a better parent than me because he is so patient with Maeya. Seeing his love for her made me realized how much I loved him and wanted to spend the rest of my life with him by my side, raising a family together. Even as I took care of him while he was sick, I never once wanted to leave his side and I couldn’t wait to marry him!
After I recovered from my surgeries, I knew it was only a matter of time before I would ask her to marry me. She put a little pressure on the timeline, but it was only speeding up the inevitable. The night of the proposal was one of the most nerve racking nights of my life. Before I was about to propose, Tia excused herself to the restroom and it felt like she was gone forever. But, when she came back to the table, I successfully proposed and pow, we were getting married.
After a wonderful surprise engagement party planned with the help of Tia’s cousin and Matron of Honor, the wedding planning commenced. Our 10-month engagement flew by and pow, we are married!
