Courtney & Jed engaged!

The meeting was arranged for Jan. 31, 2014. Jed walks into The Saranac Public House prepared to meet a woman he knew little about. A friend of Jed’s spoke to him about a beautiful, brilliant, adventurous woman and said they should meet. Tonight would be the night. The women were seated in the back, three ladies sitting in a booth. Jed says “hi” and sits down. Pleasantries are exchanged when the fourth woman walks up to Jed, “You are in my seat,” she says. Courtney – a lawyer – fails to object. Surprised and apologetic, Jed stands up just when his friends walk in. The meeting was over in about a minute.

But a minute was enough. He finds her stunning. Although they only spoke briefly there is no doubt she is someone Jed wants to meet again. Lucky for Jed, a text message buzzes on his phone at 11:07 that night. “You should call Courtney.” So he does – three days later. Courtney misses his call. After listening to a very calm and confident voicemail Courtney is intrigued and quickly calls back. In three days they will have their first date. Courtney, unsure what to expect, knows two things: 1. She wants to meet new people. 2. Jed has a movie-star smile.

The date is set. Jed is waiting outside Courtney’s office looking dapper in what Courtney will soon recognize as his uniform, a Filson cruiser jacket. She also recalls him wearing rubber boots – but this memory Jed swears to be false. He sees her to the Jeep and she is dazzling.

It is a cold February night on Spokane’s North side at a cocktail bar called Bon Bon. What is supposed to be just drinks soon turns into dinner. The couple exchanges their first laughs and tell stories, both pleasantly surprised by the quality of the other’s company. After the date, Courtney finds herself admiring Jed’s intellect, light-heartedness, and obvious desire to live life to the fullest. She can not wait until their next date. That is, if Jed will call. But he doesn’t. Not for a week…. Cool move, Conklin. Real cool.

Their first date was on a Thursday, and so is their second. Thursdays are becoming their day. Jed and Courtney continue to go out every Thursday for a month. Thursdays are comfortable – almost the weekend but not too committal. For two people not looking for love, Thursdays are the perfect solution. Yet…something changes. When Courtney leaves for vacation, Jed finds himself counting the days until she returns. He can’t stop thinking of her. She is smart, compassionate, caring and absolutely beautiful. This development is fortunate for Courtney because she is thinking of ways to break into Jed’s weekend schedule.

From that point forward the couple is inseparable. Adventure is the theme and Courtney and Jed find themselves hiking, hunting, flyfishing, exploring, rafting, skiing and loving each other unconditionally. In fact, it was in Glacier National Park, standing in a glacial stream, fly rod and bear spray in hand, when Jed says “I love you” for the first time. Just over a year after their first date, Jed asks Courtney to marry him, surrounded by dear friends, while flyfishing on the Big Hole River in Montana. Moments after she says “YES!” the champagne cork pops, the sun comes out and a double rainbow appears framing a small white, riverside chapel. Bald eagles circle overhead, both carrying a trout, and a moose swims across the river. The moment can not be more spectacular. For two people not looking for love, love certainly finds them.

Julie and Andrew at Little Spokane River

“Julie Witherspoon and Andrew Martinez first met at a taqueria shortly after Andrew moved to Denver. They both noticed each other but, true to form, he assumed she was already dating someone and she assumed he was far too attractive to be straight and single. Andrew had to get hit by a car and break his neck the day before Julie’s birthday for either one to make a move: she sent an extra cupcake to the hospital.

Amongst our friends in Denver, we continued to find common interests (wry humor, good beer, chocolate cupcakes, Mexican food, and many adventures in the great outdoors) and learned how to trust each other and find some extra space in our schedules for another person. After moving together to San Francisco and sharing the excitement and exhaustion of new cities, new jobs, new friends, and new routines, we both know that we want to spend the rest of our lives together–wherever that may take us.

The first major commitment was our german-shepherd puppy, Cali. The second, our marriage.”

We chose to get married at Julie’s parent’s house overlooking the Little Spokane River, where Julie grew up and where Andrew proposed to her during a hike on Thanksgiving day last year.

Dana & James at St. Aloysuis Church and The Davenport Hotel

How We Met:

James and I both attended Gonzaga University. However, during our time there neither of us really crossed paths. I knew of him thru friends, but we never really connected. Although, I distinctly remember one night at our favorite local spot, Jack and Dans, locking eyes with him and thinking to myself that I would always remember that moment. I wasn’t sure why at the time, but I know now.

Years passed and I was living with his cousin, Maria Barnes, at the time. Maria and I decided to hit up the Fremont OctoberFEST. It was POURING that night. We bundled up in our rain jackets and hit the town. I was standing in the rain sipping on my beer and I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned around and there was James. He said to me with a huge grin on his face, “Do you know who I am?” I replied, “Of course I know who are you… you’re James Solan”. He and I both smiled… I didn’t want it going to his head that I knew so I just played it off like, yeah yeah, I know who you are. He always says in that moment when I turned around all he saw was my face tucked in my rain jacket and my huge smile that stole his heart away.

From that little spark the rest is really history. We both flirted away for the next few months with lots of late nights filled with playing darts, singing karaoke, and late nights with our favorite girl Maria. He officially asked me out on Valentines Day 6 years ago. Thru the years we’ve been thru so much together, but with everything, it has always brought us closer.

It has been truly life changing meeting James. His zest for life, fun, and adventure is endless. His love for Gonzaga, family and friends has brought so much happiness into my life. He’s my best friend and I really can’t believe I get to have him by my side for the rest of my life. Jackpot!

Engagement Story:

It was a beautiful Christmas morning. I was with my family sipping coffee, enjoying the time just being home and having James with me. My Dad started mumbling something about how he forgot to put some items in the stockings and asked my mom to help him find the things upstairs. I didn’t think anything of it…this was typical parent behavior. So they headed upstairs…

James and I were sitting by the tree and he began to say some very sweet things about our relationship and what I meant to him. It seemed as though he was getting nervous about something, so to distract me he said, “Hey, which present are you most excited about?” I replied, “Well I don’t know. They are all still wrapped (duh), but I guess that one over there.” When I looked back at him he had the ring out and said, “How about spending the rest of your life with me?” From there, I basically started jumping up and down, exclaiming “Really? Really? Really??!!” I of course said yes and quickly asked, “Do my parents know?” Of course they did too. I went to go see them and there they were standing at the top of the stairs cheering and crying together. It was such a beautiful moment to share with them. I’ll always be so grateful to James for asking me in such a special place to me, my childhood home.
