Kyleigh is the woman I never believed I deserved, but always knew I needed – so that Friday night, when I had the chance to propose, it just had to be perfect.
To start – On our first date, SHE asked ME out…
…well, sort of.
Her email: “I have an extra ticket to a show downtown and my friend can’t go. Would you like to go with me?” She asked me to accompany her to a show at the Bing Crosby Theater, in downtown Spokane. I later found out that there was no ‘friend’ who couldn’t go, it was for me all along (tricky!). A Portland-born cavalcade, ‘The Wanderlust Circus’, stars definitive Ringmaster, Noah Mickens, as the leader of a steam-punk’d troupe full of talented dancers, comedic moments, acrobatic oddities and exciting music in a majestic theater. Having asked me as a ‘friend’, neither one of us were quite certain it was a date, but by the time it was over, I knew I just had to see her again.
As a traveling consultant, living in St. Louis, MO, I was working here in this new and beautiful city, Spokane, WA. It wasn’t long before I came to realize that the atmosphere was very different here. When Kyleigh became part of the story, I quickly knew, although my job here was for a short instance, my time in this place would be life-changing. Less than three months after that seven-week project ended, I had packed up my entire life in St. Louis and moved to the Pacific Northwest. Kyleigh moved in soon after.
Fast-forward 15 months, a few career changes, two cats (sooo cute!!), a beautiful new home in our future; a growing love for each other – and yes, a lovely new custom engagement ring, It was evident that I wanted to marry her. Now I just had to figure out how to propose.
The first week of October, 2015, Kyleigh’s friend, Siobhan, got involved, and as it happens, was key in pulling it all off. Her suggestion: she would take Kyleigh out for a ‘girls night’; then I had to figure out where this grand surprise should occur. Just a few days before the event was to happen, I figured it out; what came to mind was a epiphany – and I never imagined it could work so perfectly.
My revelation: Go back to the beginning!
The Bing Crosby Theater is normally busy every night, especially on the weekends – so how is it possible that, when I opened the calendar on their website, Friday night, October 9th, was wide-open? There was no show scheduled (I found out later that another show was cancelled). ‘Serendipity!’ I thought, ‘Why not just ask?’
After a few calls & a bit of schmoozing, I talked the owner of the Bing Crosby Theater into letting me rent the entire venue out for an hour on Friday night, with music playing & on-stage – a video projection playing collages I made from our past 15 months together – including those adorable cats.
Friday arrived and I had been working out of town all week (a minor fib perhaps, I returned Friday morning to put the plans in motion – she had no idea). Of course, Kyleigh had ‘plans’ Friday night to go out for a ‘Girls Night’ with Siobhan – or so she thought…
They stopped for a drink, and as Kyleigh and Siobhan left the bar, they crossed the street towards the Bing Crosby Theater…
…and as Kyleigh looked up, the grand marquis read:
FOR: NICK & KYLEIGH”
Tears began streaming down her face as she realized what was about to happen. Siobhan took Kyleigh by the hand and led her into the theater.
Frank Sinatra’s “I’ve Got a Crush on You” crooned throughout the Bing Theater’s Grand Hall as I stood there at the front, next to the stage, waiting in a suit and tie, cradling two dozen long-stem roses in my left arm and a beautiful engagement ring in my right pocket.
Kyleigh entered the theater. Her sobs were both nervous and happy as she walked down to greet me. Taking her hand, I led Kyleigh up the stairs, onto the stage. I stopped at mid-stage and turned to her; taking a quiet moment before I spoke. With her hands in mine, I expressed just how much I love her, how I cherish the moments we’ve spent together this past year and how I want to continue to live those moments, with her, the rest of my life.
Kneeling down, with my own tear-filled eyes, I gazed up at Kyleigh and spoke these words: “Kyleigh Buess, will you be my wife?”
Her answer: A happy-tears filled “Yes!”
In the same place, on that same stage, where The Wanderlust Circus inspired new romance, I became engaged to the woman I’ve dreamed of for so long. She has captivated me – my heart – completely.
One more thing: As another incredible element to this grand event, while planning the evening, I began to consider that people in Spokane, seeing the Bing’s marquis was changed to say something so different from the usual shows, they might want to know what’s going on. I got in touch with the newsroom at KHQ, the NBC affiliate in Spokane, to tell them why the sign would be so different – just to see what they thought Well, not only were they interested in the story, they sent a camera crew, filmed the entire event and put it on the 11:00 o’clock news!

I’ll forever remember the way she glowed as she appeared at the start of the aisle on our wedding day – she looked like a goddess. My eyes filled up with tears behind my glasses and I started trembling. It truly was the magical moment we had been waiting and planning for.
Kyleigh inspires me to be the man, and the husband I’ve always believed I could be. She’s my wild and wonderful dream come true. We had a beautiful, fun wedding and I’m so very lucky to be married to her!

“Meeting you was fate, becoming your friend was a choice, but falling in love with you was beyond my control.” -Unknown
That quote is a perfect description of how I feel about my life with Craig. I met him randomly when I was out of town with a girlfriend. He had a great personality and seemed like a fun guy so we invited him to meet us out for dinner. Neither of us expected him to actually take us up on our offer, so when he did it was a pleasant surprise. While I didn’t think he was my type at the time, he is definitely my type now. My perfect match… my soul mate. Craig is the most kind, giving man I know and keeps me laughing on a daily basis. He quickly became my very best friend and even when our lives took different paths for a short while, we stayed close. I knew I needed him in my life and no one compared to the love I felt for him.
Craig proposed to me this past Christmas and I get to marry him in a few short months. I feel like the luckiest girl in the world because he can have anyone and yet he chooses me.
